
Between 1 and 4 June 2021, Josep Borrell Fontelles, High Representative of the Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy and Vice-President of the European Commission in charge of a stronger Europe in the World, travelled to Indonesia.
On the 1st day, Josep Borrell Fontelles together with Vincent Piket, Head of the Delegation of the EU to Indonesia and Brunei, met with European ambassadors.
On the 2nd day, Josep Borrell Fontelles met with Retno Marsudi, Indonesian Minister for Foreign Affairs. In parallel to this meeting, Vincent Piket and Angela Tormin, Director of KfW's Jakarta Office, participated in a signing ceremony of the project “Strengthen University Teaching Hospitals in the fight against COVID-19 and pandemic preparedness” lead by Team Europe. The project aimed ti increase the response capacity of two University Teaching Hospitals, Hasanuddin University (UNHAS) and University of Brawijaya (UNIBRAW), in the fight against COVID-19 and future epidemics. KfW on behalf of the German Federal Minister for Economic Cooperation and Development provided a loan funding (€67 million) to the Government of Indonesia for completion and upgrade of these two University Teaching Hospitals, which accompanied by a grant provided by the European Union (€10 million) to strengthen virus surveillance, increase test capacities for COVID-19, increase capacities for medical treatment of COVID-19 patients, as well as strengthen research capacities.
On the same day, Josep Borrell Fontelles met with representatives of Indonesian Parliament’s Foreign Relations Commission and Inter-Parliamentary Cooperation Commission, also with Lim Jock Hoi, Secretary General of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), and the ASEAN Committee of Permanent Representatives.
On the 3rd day, Josep Borrell Fontelles met with Prabowo Subianto, Indonesian Minister for Defence, visited the ASEAN Coordinating Centre for Humanitarian Assistance on disaster management (AHA Centre) and took part in the inauguration of the new premises of EU Delegation to Indonesia and Brunei-Darussalam and Delegation to ASEAN.
On that day, Josep Borrell Fontelles also gave a speech at the Centre for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS) on the EU approach to the Indo-Pacific.
On the final day of his visit, Josep Borrell Fontelles met with Bima Arya Sugiarto, Mayor of Bogor.
