On 7 and 8 November 2024, Charles Michel, President of the European Council, Roberta Metsola, President of the European Parliament, and Ursula von der Leyen, President of the European Commission, travelled to Budapest, Hungary, to participate in the 5th Meeting of the European Political Community, hosted by
Viktor Orbán, Hungarian Prime Minister, during the Hungarian presidency of the Council of the EU. The meeting had the participation of leaders of 24 EU member states and leaders of 18 non-member states, and heads of International Organisations. The puurpose of the European Political Community is to foster political dialogue and cooperation to address issues of common interest
strengthen the security, stability and prosperity of the European continentm without an intention to replace any existing organisation, structure or process, nor does it aim to create new ones at this stage.
During this meeting, the leaders discussed Europe’s security challenges, in the context of Russia’s war of aggression against Ukraine and the ongoing escalation in the Middle East, irregular migration and issues related to economic security and connectivity in terms of energy, transport, IT and global trade.On 8 November 2024, Charles Michel chaired the informal meeting of Heads of State or Government of the European Council, also hosted by Viktor Orbán. Following the meeting, they hosted a joint press conference.
