FOREIGN AFFAIRS - Georgia: Q&A
Hello Luka Formula TV.
What is the European Commission's response to the detention of Georgian opposition leader Helene Khoshtaria just yesterday and just ongoing crackdown on politicians, media,
civil society, and activists in Georgia,
and if the Commission is discussing any concrete measures in response to this process in Georgia,
thank you. Thank you.
First and foremost, the youth stands with and all the
unjustly detained political prisoners and journalists and civil society from Georgia.
Our full solidarity goes to them and we call for their immediate release.
Now from our side we have taken actions and we're continuing to explore ways and options throughout when it comes to putting
further pressure on the Georgian authorities in view of the huge democratic backsliding that we have seen,
and this has started already.
With the High Representative throughout the FACs and also the last meeting of the foreign ministers in July,
but also the discussions that we have been seen included
also further options in terms of what we can foresee.
Sanctions to suspension of the visa-free regime and other options.
In the meantime, as discussed, we have fully downgraded our political contacts,
stopped the financial assistance to the Georgian authorities,
and increased our support to civil society. Thank you Stefan.
