Show transcript

Hi, thank you Mara Quinn for Euronews.

We understand that Commissioner Dubravka Šuica is planning to travel to Washington later this week to participate in.

In Donald Trump's first meeting of the Board of Peace, I was wondering if you could confirm whether this was in response to an invitation that the Commission received to participate as an observer to the board,

in what capacity will the Commissioner will be attending and any more details about what she's trying to get out of this meeting on Thursday. Thank you.

Yes, thank you, and Guillaume will give you more elements,

and indeed it was in response to an invitation, Guillaume. Thank you. The question is, hi.

So indeed I can confirm that Commissioner Šuica, will travel to DC, later this week.

She will participate in, in the meeting of the Borders of Peace, for the specific part dedicated to, Gaza.

Let me stress that, the European Commission, it's not becoming, a member, to the Borders Peace.

So we are participating in this, in this meeting, precisely in, in our, Long-standing commitment, when it comes to the implementation of the ceasefire, in Gaza,

but as well as, to take part in our,

in the international efforts to support the reconstruction and the post-recovery, the post-war recovery, in, in Gaza.

As you know, the EU has played a very important role, in, in Gaza, I mean,

we also, we have been supporting, Palestinians, we are the biggest, donor to the, to the Palestinian.

Palestinians, earlier, last year actually, we, we put together, a,

support program for, for the Palestinians €1.6 billion.

We also have been providing, €500 million in terms of, humanitarian aid since October 2023.

So this is really in line with our strong commitment to support, the, the people on the ground. Thank you. Yes, you have a follow up. Yes, thank you.

Can you tell us more, Guillaume, about what the Commission understands by observer status? What does that mean? Does it give you a vote?

Does it give you influence over the board's work?

And then secondly, we've also heard from some EU leaders, Giorgia Meloni.

For example, saying over the weekend that Italy has also accepted observer status.

Is the Commission coordinating with governments at the moment to better understand what they are doing as well in response to these fresh invitations that seem to be inviting on a different level,

on an observer level? Thank you.

Thank you, for the, the question the member states, I will pass the floor to, to anyone.

What I can say from, from our side, from Commissioner Šuica's side,

side is that we are really doing this, in the context of our strong commitment as I explained.

No matter the status of engagement here in the border of peace,

what matters here is what the EU can bring to the discussions, and we have an important role to play. We have expertise.

We have already important financial support, and it is in this context that we want to take part in those discussions.

Good, and then indeed I can compliment just in terms of the Reach out to other Member States and then We'll see if there are other questions to Guillaume, Anouar very briefly,

just to compliment on the question.

Yes, indeed, yes, your question was in terms of coordination and member states, right?

What I can say is the following the High Representative is in touch with ministers,

that's one, and as you know, we have a Foreign Affairs Council next week.

Ministers will, at that Foreign Affairs Council, discuss with Mr.

Mladenov what the European Union can concretely contribute to the peace plan in Gaza,

so this is the perspective I can share with you today. Good, thank you, Anouar. Now, are the questions still on this? Yes, please, Odil.

And let's see if it's Anouar or Mm . And But no, you. The speaker unfortunately has no microphone. Thank you very much, Paula.

But in parallel to this, are you reacting to the fact that Israel is continuing to bomb Gaza,

that there have been, I believe, 11 fatalities over the weekend. How are you reacting to that? Thank you very much indeed, Odile.

I think that we've always spoken out clearly as regards our position on this podium.

We've made it clear what our position is as regards the situation on the ground.

We have called on all parties to implement the peace plan.

And since your question focuses on this,

we want there to be a ceasefire to stop deaths and loss of life on the ground.

We have called upon all parties to fully implement the peace plan and to Implement the ceasefire.

Now you have referred to certain events on the ground.

Let me recall our position when it comes to the recent decision taken by the security cabinet to extend the Israeli control on the West Bank.

We said that this was a step in the wrong direction because the whole The international community is trying to implement the peace plan for Gaza,

and that brings me back to the meeting which is to be held on the 19th of February.

Now on the latest development,

the Israeli decision to try to start a new developments in Zone C.

This is an escalation following the measures to extend Israeli control in zones A and B.

This latest decision is clearly behind,

is clearly opposed to UN resolution 2334 and the decision to have a two-state solution. Our position has always been crystal clear.

Our position is that we do not recognize Israel's sovereignty on the territories occupied by Israel since 1967 in line with the UN Security Council resolution.

Annexation is illegal in the eyes of international law.

We would like to call upon Israel to revoke this decision,

and could I recall the joint declaration which was published last week by the High Representative in conjunction with Commissioners Šuica and Lahbib to react to last week's decision.

Any more questions for Anouar?
