
On 5 December 2019, Janez Lenarčič, European Commissioner for Crisis Management, visited Albania to assess the damage after the earthquake which struck the country on 26 November. This visit follows the announcement by Ursula von der Leyen, President of the European Commission, of €15 million in EU funds to support the Albanian people following the devastating earthquake. Janez Lenarčič visited a damaged school in Durrës, as well as a temporary shelter camp in Vorë, together with Edi Rama, Albanian Prime Minister, Bledi Çuçi, Albanian Minister for Agriculture and Rural Development, and Luigi Soreca, Head of the EU Delegation to Albania. On this occasion, the Commissioner met wit experts from the European Civil Protection Team, as well as Italian and Greek structural engineers, all deployed through the EU Civil Protection Mechanism.
