From 23 to 24 January 2020, Janez Lenarčič, European Commissioner for Crisis Management, was in Nigeria.
On the 23rd, Janez Lenarčič visited the north-east Gwoza in Borno State and met with representatives of the humanitarian community, representatives of the armed forces of Nigeria, and Babagana Zulum, Governor of Borno State.
On the 24th, Janez Lenarčič travelled to Abuja, capital city of Nigeria. The Commissioner notably met with Muhammadu Buhari,
President of Nigeria, and Sadiya Umar Farouq, Nigerian minister for Humanitarian Affairs, Disaster Management and Social Development. They discussed the joint Nigerian and EU priorities for the next years and the humanitarian action in the Northeast of the Country.
Whilst visiting Nigeria, Janez Lenarčič has announced a first emergency aid package for 2020. The EU's new aid package will provide food aid, access to clean water and sanitation facilities, shelter, basic primary healthcare and education for children caught up in conflict.
