On 26 November 2021, Ursula von der Leyen, President of the European Commission, made a statement on the new Omicron variant of COVID-19. The European Commission has proposed to Member States to activate the ‘emergency brake' on travel from countries in southern African and other countries affected to limit the spread of the new variant.
