
From 19 to 21 May 2023, Ursula von der Leyen, President of the European Commission, traveled to Hiroshima, Japan, to participate in the G7 Summit with Fumio Kishida, Japanese Prime Minister, Charles Michel, President of the European Council, Emmanuel Macron, President of the French Republic, Olaf Scholz, German Federal Chancellor, Giorgia Meloni, Italian Prime Minister, Rishi Sunak, British Prime Minister, Joe Biden, President of the United States, and Justin Trudeau, Premier ministre canadien.On the first day, the participants visited the Hiroshima Peace Memorial Park to pay tribute to the victims of the atomic bomb and the World War II. Afterwards, they attended a working lunch where they discussed topics such as efforts to make economies stronger, more competitive and more resilient; trade relations with China; national security interests; collaboration on key foreign and security policy challenges; and new partnerships such as the Global Gateway. At the end of the day, they visited Itsukushima Shrine and attended a working dinner.The next day, the G7 participants had a meeting with representatives from invited countries and international organisations to debate subjects such as health preparedness, climate change mitigation and the upcoming COP28 and G20 Summit. Following the meeting, Ursula von der Leyen and the participants of the G7 held a session to discuss a needed paradigm shifts in engaging global partners and the fight against poverty, climate change and debt challenges.On the last day, the leaders of the G7 received Volodymyr Zelenskyy, President of Ukraine, and expressed their strong support to Ukrainian sovereignty and territorial integrity.
