On 9 February 2025, Ursula von der Leyen, President of the European Commission, travelled to Vilnius, Lithuania. On this occasion, the President met with Gitanas Nausėda, President of Lithuania, Andrzej Duda, President of Poland, Alar Karis, President of Estonia, and Edgars Rinkēvičs, president of Latvia, with whom she gave a press conference on the synchronization of the Continental European electricity system with the systems of the Baltic countries. She also met with Gintautas Paluckas, Lithuanian Prime Minister, and delivered a speech at the Synchronisation Baltic Connectors Opening Event.
Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania integrated into the EU internal energy market by joining the European continental network via Poland. They are now fully independent from Russia's and Belarus's electricity systems. This allows the Baltic States to operate their own energy systems under common and transparent European rules. The synchronisation of the Baltics not only contributes to the security of supply of the entire Union, it also support the integration of renewable energy in the system, ultimately allowing consumers to benefit from lower energy costs.
