Opening statement by Maroš Šefčovič, Vice-President of the European Commission, on the Common charger for mobile equipment, extract from the plenary session of the EP 

On 13 January 2020, Maroš Šefčovič, Vice-President of the European Commission in charge of Interinstitutional relations and Foresight, participated in a plenary session of the EP on the common charger for mobile equipment, in Strasbourg, France.
To reduce electronic waste and make consumers’ life easier, MEPs want binding measures for chargers to fit all mobile phones and other portable devices.
In the 2014 Radio Equipment Directive, EU lawmakers called for a common charger to be developed and gave the Commission powers to pursue this via a delegated act.
