To raise awareness amongst companies and entrepreneurs about the risks and uncertainties of not declaring work, Dirk Hellemans from Belgium shares his story. The video is part of the #EU4FairWork campaign launched by the European Platform tackling undeclared work, together with the European Labour Authority.
I am Dirk Hellemans from Herentals, Belgium.
I set up my own construction company in 1991
and I have developed a strong network of specialised subcontractors.
When I founded the company, I had a clear idea in mind,
to work in a qualitative way, striving for the highest standards.
This requires building a certain structure
and a good network of like-minded people.
To find skilled staff, you need to offer them a decent contract,
with social security in case of sickness
and certainty towards the future.
Companies who do not declare work are playing with fire.
They may think it brings them flexibility and cost reduction.
However, they are risking their business with possible legal disputes
or extraordinary costs which is not of their benefit.
{\an2}The COVID-19 pandemic obliged us to review some health
and safety measures for our staff and customers.
We quickly adapted, our staff felt secure
knowing they were protected and we were able to resume work quickly.
To ensure businesses and workers are protected
the state should remain transparent.
This will play an important role in reducing undeclared work.
Declared work ensures that I can maintain the company
and quality I envisaged when I founded the business.
It shows our professionalism and expertise in our work.
Respect the rules, declare your income and workers.
Check this across your supply chain, as this makes you a trusted employer.
