On 9 March 2021, Josep Borrell Fontelles, High Representative of the Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy and Vice-President of the European Commission in charge of a stronger Europe in the World, attended the plenary session of the European Parliament on the Syrian conflict - 10 years after the uprising, in Brussels, Belgium.
A peaceful uprising against Bashar al-Assad, President of Syria, in March 2011 turned into a full-scale civil war. The conflict has left more than 360,000 people dead, devastated cities and drawn in other countries.
