On 14 September 2021, Josep Borrell Fontelles, High Representative of the Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy and Vice-President of the European Commission in charge of a stronger Europe in the World, attended a plenary session of the European Parliament (EP) in Strasbourg, France, dedicated on the situation in Lebanon.
Lebanon has been without a fully empowered government since the catastrophic August 4, 2020 explosion at Beirut port, which forced the resignation of then Prime Minister Hassan Diab’s government. Rival political groups were locked in disagreement over the make-up of a new government since then, hastening the country’s economic meltdown.
A new government was announced on 10 September 2021.
