On 6 June 2022, Olivér Várhelyi, European Commissioner for Neighbourhood and Enlargement, participated in the Plenary Session of the European Parliament held in Strasbourg, France, where he gave a closing statement onon the EEAS’s Climate Change and Defence Roadmap.

On this occasion, Olivér Várhelyi reiterated the willingness to respect the mission—first principle in order to make sure that the armed forces can do their job of protection. He added that said energy efficiency and the environmental sustainability will strengthen, not hamper operational efficiency if done in the right way.
