On 7 September 2022, Ursula von der Leyen, President of the European Commission, made a statement on energy at the European Commission in Brussels, Belgium.
On this occasion, the President presented five proposals to tackle the ongoing energy crisis in the EU: a plan for smart electricity savings, a cap on the revenues of companies that are producing electricity with low costs, a cap on the unexpected profits of fossil fuel companies, support for energy utility companies and owering the costs of gas by putting a cap on Russian gas prices.
