On 17 November 2022, Frans Timmermans, Executive Vice-President of the European Commission in charge of the European Green Deal, and Commissioner for Climate Action, attended the 27th United Nations climate change conference (COP27) of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), in Sharm El Sheikh, Egypt. On this occasion, he participated in the Global Methane Pledge Ministerial Meeting on keeping 1.5C within reach, where he delivered a speech stressing that this year's IPCC assessment showed that human-driven methane emissions are responsible for nearly 45% of current net warming. He also remarked that Methane is the cheapest and fastest way to slow down global warming in the years ahead and it is possible to reduce the accelerating global warming by doing simple proven things in agriculture, energy and waste sectors.
