[DEMOGRAPHY AND CLIMATE CHANGE]

[EU IN THE GLOBAL CONTEXT]

[DEMOGRAPHY AND CLIMATE CHANGE]

[ARE GLOBAL TRENDS THAT IMPACT ONE ANOTHER]

[THE GLOBAL POPULATION HAS REACHED 8 BILLION]

[AND WILL CONTINUE TO GROW]

[MEANWHILE OUR RAPIDLY AGEING EUROPEAN POPULATION IS EXPECTED TO SHRINK]

[THIS IS HAPPENING IN PARALLEL WITH CLIMATE CHANGE]

People around the world are losing their livelihoods and even their lives

due to more frequent heatwaves, floods, wildfires and droughts.

[OLDER PEOPLE WILL FACE CHALLENGES]

[RELATED TO HEALTH, HOUSING, MOBILITY]

[AND CAPACITY TO DEAL WITH EXTREME WEATHER]

[CLIMATE CHANGE WILL ALSO WORSEN CONDITIONS]

[FOR VULNERABLE GROUPS LIKE WOMEN AND CHILDREN]

To design effective climate and environment policies,

we need to understand how demographic change affects emissions,

and how climate change impacts different population groups.

For instance, to reduce air pollution to levels not harmful for people,

we need to factor in the impact of population change.

[RESEARCH CAN HELP TO CLARIFY THESE COMPLEXITIES]

The Joint Research Centre’s work is important.

It shines a light on how populations and demographic transformations

can shape the green and digital transitions.

[IT IS IMPORTANT THAT OUR POLICIES]

[TAKE FUTURE DEVELOPMENTS INTO ACCOUNT]

To make Europe resilient in the face of long-term challenges

like climate change and demographic trends,

we need to make the most of strategic foresight,

helping us identify uncertainties, risks but also opportunities.

[PEOPLE PLAY A ROLE AND SUSTAINABLE LIFESTYLE MATTERS]

This is why population dynamics are crucial to the design of policies

for the green and digital transition.
