On 18 June 2023, Josep Borrell Fontelles, High Representative of the Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy and Vice-President of the European Commission in charge of a stronger Europe in the World, went in Egypt.
The visit was organised as an opportunity to review and strengthen the EU-Egypt partnership, as well as the cooperation between the EU and the League of Arab States, and discuss common global and regional challenges, such as migration, energy, counterterrorism, and food security.
Josep Borrell Fontelles met with Sameh Shoukry, Egyptian Minister for Foreign Affairs, with whom he discussed the further broadening and deepening of the EU-Egypt cooperation, including energy, trade, human rights and migration, as well as on regional issues such as the MEPP, Syria and Nile river waters.
He also met with Ahmed Aboul Gheit, Secretary-General of the League of Arab States, to discuss the EU-LAS relations, regional matters, and Russia’s aggression against Ukraine.
