On 9 August 2023, Ursula von der Leyen, President of the European Commission, travelled to Ljubljana, Slovenia, to express her solidarity and witness the destruction caused by the floods that hit the country in the past days. On the occasion, she met with Robert Golob, Prime Minister of Slovenia, and discussed the ways in which the EU can support reconstruction and prevention efforts. Together with Robert Golob and Janez Lenarčič, European Commissioner for Crisis Management, Ursula von der Leyen visited the most damaged areas by the floods in Slovenia. Following the visit, Ursula von der Leyen and Robert Golob held a press point on a package of three components, for the immediate needs and the mid and long term for the recovery of the affected areas, such as the Solidarity Fund, making accessible EUR 400 million – EUR 100 million of them still this year and EUR 300 million next year; funds from the NextGenerationEU, which Slovenia is already using, and with EUR 2.7 billion still accessible; and, finally, the existing and already programmed money that can be reprogrammed, with 3.3 billion of cohesion funds. Finally, Ursula von der Leyen delivered a speech at the extraordinary plenary session of the National Assembly of Slovenia. This video shows Ursula von der Leyen, Robert Golob and Janez Lenarčič flying over flood-affected areas by helicopter.
