On 18 October 2023, Ursula von der Leyen, President of the European Commission, participated in the Plenary Session of the European Parliament held in Strasbourg, France, where she gave an opening statement together with José Manuel Albares Bueno, Spanish Minister for Foreign Affairs, European Union and Cooperation, Josep Borrell Fontelles, High Representative of the Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy and Vice-President of the European Commission in charge of a stronger Europe in the World, and Roberta Metsola, President of the European Parliament, on the despicable terrorist attacks by Hamas against Israel, Israel's right to defend itself in line with humanitarian and international law and the humanitarian situation in Gaza.
On this occasion, Ursula von der Leyen namely addressed the humanitarian and regional situation in the country underlining that Europe stands with Israel in this dark moment.
