The new Ecodesign for Sustainable Products Regulation (ESPR) will revolutionise the way products are made, used, and dealt with at the end of their life.
It will set sustainable design requirements for some of the most environmentally damaging products and allow consumers to enjoy durable and repairable products that are more energy efficient and easier to reuse and recycle.
Did you know that how a product is designed
can have a huge impact on the environment.
A new EU regulation aims to address this
by improving the way products are made,
used and dealt with at the end of their life.
The Ecodesign for Sustainable Products Regulation
will allow the EU to set ecodesign requirements
for some of the most environmentally damaging products.
Consumers will enjoy more durable and repairable items
like tyres, clothes and laptops
that are more energy efficient
and easier to reuse and recycle.
They'll also be produced
in a more environmentally friendly way,
including from more sustainable materials.
To help shoppers make more sustainable choices,
a new digital product passport
will tell you more
about the product's impact on the environment
before you buy it.
Companies will have to reduce
the wasteful destruction of unsold consumer goods.
Destroying unsold clothes and shoes will be banned outright.
The new rules could see EU greenhouse gas emissions cut by up to 7%,
encourage more sustainable choices
and propel us towards a circular economy
in which products are designed
to minimise their environmental impact,
last longer,
and respect planetary boundaries.
The Ecodesign for Sustainable Products Regulation,
paving the way for a world in which sustainability is a way of life.
