On 22 January 2025, the annual conference of the European Defence Agency took place in Brussels, Belgium. On this occasion, Kaja Kallas, High Representative of the Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy and Vice-President of the European Commission, delivered a speech on priorities for new horizons in the defence of the European Union. In her speech, she stressed that although Russia’s economy has begun to decline, it still poses a significant threat to the EU’s security. She also agreed with President Donald Trump that the EU should spend more on defence: Trump recently said that NATO member states needed to increase their defence spending from the current target of 2% to 5%. The Commissioner added that the EU should take its fair share of responsibility for EU’s security and that the United States should remain a strong ally. This video shows her entire speech.
