On 1 April 2025, Kaja Kallas, High Representative of the Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy and Vice-President of the European Commission, participated in the Plenary Session of the European Parliament in Strasbourg, France. She emphasised the EU's commitment to supporting human rights defenders and promoting democracy, citing the extension of the Action Plan on Human Rights and Democracy and a new funding package. Kaja Kallas underscored the importance of defending the rules-based international order, particularly in the face of conflicts in Ukraine and the Middle East. She reiterated the EU's support for the International Criminal Court and its global sanctions regime to address human rights abuses.
