On 20 May 2025, Marta Kos, European Commissioner for Enlargement, attended the Foreign Affairs Council in Brussels, Belgium, chaired by Kaja Kallas, High Representative of the Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy.
During the Council meeting, the EU Ministers first discussed EU support to Ukraine, then held a discussion on defence readiness. The Council also exchanged views on the situation in the Middle East, including Syria. The Council adopted the 17th package of EU sanctions on Russia’s war of aggression against Ukraine, new sanctions package countering Russia’s hybrid activities, sanctions against the proliferation and use of chemical weapons and under the Russia Human Rights regime, as well as Council conclusions on Yemen.
