Midday press briefing from 26/05/2025

Show transcript

AFP news agency,

I have questions about the phone call between

the European Commission President von der Leyen and Trump.

I'd like to know details of the phone call that you're willing to give,

what did VDL,

what did von der Leyen say to Trump that led to the delay to July,

which was already foreseen,

parenthesis here why July?

I ask because considering she actually managed to go from 50% on 11th of June to July,

I'd also like to have some tips on how

to handle people who one might describe as hostile.

I'd just like to note that there's going to be a debrief today to Member States,

so someone somewhere has notes about the phone call,

so if we could just get a little sneak peek,

I'd be very grateful.

And I've got some technical questions of when the next in

person meeting between the US and the EU side will be,

and can I just get a clarification?

Are we at like technical talks,

it's negotiations between negotiators?

I just want to be very clear about the kind of language we're using.

Thank you.

Thank you.

Now that

those were many questions in one,

but let me share with you indeed what can be shared between

the call yesterday between President von der Leyen and President Trump.

First of all,

it was a good call,

indeed,

as was also noted in the social media post by President von der Leyen and

confirmed by President Trump himself

when he spoke to the press yesterday.

So basically they agreed both to fast track the

trade negotiations and to stay in close contact.

Now in terms of what were the details of the discussions,

we will not enter into that,

but what I can say,

we are talking about,

of course,

the world's

single largest

and closest trading relations,

so these negotiations.

are complex,

and so they are taking time now

with this call,

there's now also a new impetus

for the negotiations,

and we will take it from there.

It's positive to see

that there's engagement also at the level of the presidents

and

from our side,

we always said

that we were ready

to make a deal.

Now,

in terms of negotiations,

as you know,

we have a very good negotiating team in place,

led

by Commissioner Šefčovič,

who is bringing forward the discussions.

This was now the moment for a contact at President's level and in the meantime,

the discussions will continue as early as this afternoon,

where Commissioner Šefčovič will have a call with Secretary for Trade

Lutnik,

and that's all we can say for the moment.

Yes,

please.

Peggy Conner for Euronews,

has the EU changed its offer to the US,

to avoid the 50% tariff?

We will not enter into the details of the,

the discussions.

The secret of

of the negotiations is precisely in its discretion,

so we will not go into that,

at least not for,

for the moment.

Yes,

Angela.

Yes,

Angela Maro Italy,

we know from Italian sources that Meloni is organizing or trying to organize

a European meeting with the President also in Italy.

I don't know,

this is what we know,

for the first week of June.

Can you confirm and do you think that in that occasion,

because that's what

comes from Italian sources as well.

That on that occasion there could be

a meeting

between

Trump and von der Leyen or another contact or another phone call.

Thanks.

I'm not informed of such a meeting in in in Italy

as regards the possible participation of President von der Leyen,

I would need to to look into that,

but I haven't heard this this far.

Yes,

still on this topic.

La Guardia,

I would like to go back to the call and ask uh who was uh the

idea if it was the president's or or the team or Šefčovič who decided that.

Thank you.

Yes,

the call was um uh initiated by President von der Leyen,

but in fact it was,

it seems a mutual intention to speak to each other,

so it came uh indeed timely for both,

presidents.

Yes.

Angela Skujins from TVP World,

I know that you've talked about trade,

but did it at all talk about,

touch on support for Ukraine,

and if it did what was discussed,

and if it wasn't discussed,

why wasn't support for Ukraine discussed?

Thank you.

The focus

was on on the trade discussions indeed.

Yes,

Chen.

Thank you Paula.

First,

the call this afternoon between Šefčovič and Lutnick,

it's only with Lutnick also with Greer.

Secondly,

even though you cannot enter into details,

can you tell us at least

whether the president offered something additional to what was

in the proposals sent by the EU,

to Mr.

Trump during the call,

and,

yeah,

that's for now.

Jorge,

as said,

discretion is the soul of negotiations,

so I will not enter into details here with

regard to the participants in the call this afternoon.

All of you may have more details.

Yes,

thanks for your question,

Jorge.

As far as I'm aware,

it's only with Secretary Lutnick.

yes,

Jorge,

follow up.

Thank you.

Since we have all of on the podium,

if,

you would summarize,

Friday's call between uh Šefčovič with his American counterparts also as a good

call as it was the case of uh the president with Mr.

Trump.

Thanks for your question,

Jorge,

but we prefer to live in the present.

Friday is the past and we're focused on

a productive call this afternoon between the EU and the US,

building on the good call,

as Paula mentioned,

between our presidents yesterday.

Good

Yes.

Thank you,

Marco Brazolin La Stampa,

to a quick question,

and the first one was the president in touch with

other leaders before,

calling President Trump yesterday,

and second,

the question on today's call.

we've heard that you are going to also to,

to inform member states in Coreper

will this,

information with member states be shared before ahead of

self which call or after as a debriefing?

Thank you.

Thank

you,

Marco.

Well,

President von der Leyen is in regular contact with uh the heads of state,

on this issue.

now if there were specific contacts yesterday before

the call,

I'm not aware,

but the fact is that there is regular contact,

so by now we are.

Well informed also for the position of the various Member States,

and it is

of great importance for President von der Leyen indeed to keep

the leaders informed of the discussions that are taking

place in the context of the trade negotiations,

and as you said this afternoon,

there will be further

discussions in the Council on this.

Yeah,

for the second question on timing,

we don't know precisely

what will be shared and when.

That will depend a little bit on how the day plays out,

but

we will provide

as much information that's useful

as we can when we can.

I can't say any more for now.

Yes,

please.

Taunta,

you're active.

Um,

apart from this call you just mentioned,

will commission officials have any other meetings this week with US counterparts?

Thanks.

We're taking this day by day,

so we'll see.

Let's see how the call goes today and we'll take it from there,

but the idea is to remain engaged and very closely engaged,

and as I said,

also

President von der Leyen and President Trump agreed to stay in close contact.

Other questions.

Uh,

I see still some uh questions online,

probably on this

uh topic,

uh,

Tommaso.

Yes,

I have a follow up question

following on from what Angela was.

Asking about

Related to

the Italian President.

In the press

in Italy,

it says that

Prime Minister

Maloney is trying to organize

a meeting of this kind,

and you said

That

you hadn't heard about this,

you didn't know anything about it.

But the aim of the meeting.

Would be to help Member States to coordinate.

Before the G7 summit

in Canada.

Do you think

It's necessary to have a meeting of this kind or not.

Given that the United States

has said that the EU.

Member States seem to want

different things,

particularly the Italians and the French.

Yes,

thank you to Maso,

as I said,

I'm not aware of this particular meeting.

Other than through the press,

so I'll have to check that.

It's always good to be well coordinated.

Of course.

And beyond

singing from the same hymn sheet.

But I can't say any more than that

because I don't know the details about that meeting.

Just one,

about the countermeasures,

there was that preliminary

provisional list.

Anything that you could say about the timeline on

because the Member States are looking at it,

what the next steps are,

if we know.

Thanks Rosie.

As far as I'm aware,

I will double check this and come back to you,

but as far as I'm aware,

we're still in the consultation phase.

So in other words,

it's a public consultation,

as well as talking to our member states,

we're talking to industry and other stakeholders

that might be interested in this to

shape a final list of potential countermeasures,

and

we

need to repeat at all stages that.

This is

preparatory work we're doing in the event that negotiations don't work out,

which is our top priority,

always has been,

and we're very much focused on making negotiations work.

For the questions,

um.

Oliver

Grimm,

you still have a question on the topic.

We cannot hear.

Oliver.

Then

we move to Gabrielle Gabriele

Jos.

Thank you,

thank you,

Paulo.

Can you hear me?

Yeah,

so thanks,

Gabriel Lozanel mesajero.

Just a clarification,

it was asked before already.

If I'm not wrong,

the so-called reciprocal tariffs were put on hold,

until July 14th.

So why July the 9th now,

so a clarification

on the calendar.

And second thing.

you've been saying a lot of times that

the zero tariff on industrial goods were

a good compromise for both sides.

That's what you

have been saying all these weeks.

Is that still the line of the commission?

Thank you.

Thanks for your question,

Gabriele.

Concerning the date,

I believe

9th of July refers to the

Date

That was the

previously foreseen

end of the American 90 day pause,

so I think it's essentially

restoring that date,

if you like,

whereas ours is a few days later,

as in the end of the EU's 90 day pause is a few days after the 9th of July.

And as regards the 0 for 0,

yes,

that is very much

still on the table.

We believe that's a very attractive starting point

for a good negotiation that could lead to

benefits on both sides of the Atlantic,

and we will certainly be making that case forcefully,

starting in the call between Commissioner

Šefčovič and Secretary Lutnick this evening,

as we have been doing all along,

and as we will continue to do.

Thank

you,

Olof.

Any more questions to Olof?

No,

then we change topic.

Yes,

please.
